Reichenberg Castle (Reichelsheim)

The origins of Reichenberg Castle possibly date back to 1150, when the Lords of Crumpach are said to have built an initial castle. After 1200, the area passed to the Schenken of Erbach. Another source dates the construction of the castle by the Erbach Schenk Johann I to the mid to late 13th century. Its first documented mention as Richenburg or Rychenburg occurred on December 8, 1307. In the late 14th century, the complex was expanded with an outer bailey to the north and east, and the Gothic St. Michael's Chapel was built as part of the outer defensive wall, donated by Schenk Eberhard X and his wife Marie von Bickenbach.
