Schloss Weißenstein – A Baroque Masterpiece+

On the site of a Truchsess Castle destroyed by fire in 1642, Johann Dientzenhofer built a castle between 1714 and 1719 according to plans by his brother Leonhard for Wilhelm Philipp von Schrottenberg. It was designed as a three-winged complex over an artificially created lake, featuring a richly decorated facade, a high, mansard-divided roof, and a mighty armorial gable. The castle is still inhabited by the von Schrottenberg family.

The History of Schloss Weißenstein+

The history of Schloss Weißenstein dates back to the Middle Ages. The first documented mention of a castle on this site dates from the 13th century. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. The current Baroque castle was built in the early 18th century and is considered one of the most important Baroque buildings in Franconia.

Architectural Features

Schloss Weißenstein is a prime example of Baroque architecture. The three-winged complex is arranged around a central courtyard and is characterized by its symmetrical design and rich ornamentation. The facade is adorned with numerous sculptures, reliefs, and stucco elements. The interior of the castle is equally impressive, with magnificent halls, salons, and private chambers.

A special feature of Schloss Weißenstein is its location on an artificially created lake. The lake not only serves as a picturesque backdrop but also played a practical role in the castle's defense in earlier times. Today, visitors can enjoy boat rides on the lake and admire the castle from a unique perspective.

The Castle Today+

Schloss Weißenstein is still privately owned by the von Schrottenberg family. Parts of the castle are open to the public and can be visited during guided tours. Visitors can explore the magnificent state rooms, the castle chapel, and the extensive castle park. The castle also hosts various cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions throughout the year.

The castle park, designed in the English landscape style, invites visitors to take leisurely strolls. It features ancient trees, picturesque ponds, and charming garden pavilions. The park also offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the castle itself.

Visitor Information

Schloss Weißenstein is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts. It is easily accessible by car and public transport. There is ample parking available on site. Guided tours are offered regularly, and visitors can also explore the castle grounds and park on their own.
