Reichstädt Castle

The origins of the estate date back to the 13th century, when a knight's estate existed in Reichstädt. A noble residence of the Lords of Reichenstadt was mentioned in 1336. In 1503, the mining lord Sigismund von Maltitz acquired the estate. His descendant Heinrich von Maltitz had it converted into a moated castle in 1535. In 1569, the property passed to Elector August I of Saxony, who used it as a hunting lodge. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was partially destroyed in 1632. Reconstruction began in 1639 under Heinrich von Taube. Later, the castle changed hands several times until it was sold in 1717 to Charlotte Christiane von Nostitz, the wife of Caspar Abraham von Schönberg. This marked the beginning of the era of the von Schönberg family, who owned the castle until its expropriation in 1945.
