Reiden Castle
Perched on a prominent hill above the village of Reiden in the Canton of Lucerne, Reiden Castle, a former Commandery of the Knights Hospitaller, stands majestically. The complex, which today consists of two main buildings connected by a high curtain wall, combines medieval origins with significant alterations from the 16th and 18th centuries, presenting itself more as a stately country house than a typical order castle.
History+
The Commandery of Reiden was founded relatively late, around 1280, by Markwart von Ifental. It is presumed that a castle belonging to the local noble family of Reiden previously stood on this site. The first commander of the settlement is documented in 1284. Over the centuries, the commandery underwent numerous changes; a stone coat of arms dated 1531 testifies to a major renovation. Around 1700, a profound redesign took place, giving the complex its current, more rural appearance. In the early 19th century, the order was dissolved in Switzerland, and in 1807, the commandery became the property of the Canton of Lucerne. The associated church was demolished in 1813.

Today, the buildings of the former Commandery of the Knights Hospitaller are privately owned. The southern building is a two-story structure without notable interior furnishings. The northern building, also two-story with a steep gable roof, houses a Baroque staircase and a Gothic banqueting hall dating from around 1700, which impresses with Baroque elements, grisaille window niches, and an ornate coffered ceiling. A magnificent, over three-meter-high tiled stove from 1701 is the only surviving furnishing.
