Reinharz Castle

The castle and the park belong to the Garden Dreams Saxony-Anhalt network.

Erected between 1690 and 1701 by the Saxon Hereditary Marshal Heinrich Löser, the simple and enclosed, seemingly still defensive construction of the exterior differs from the redesign of the ground floor in 1748 in the style of Dresden Rococo. The wooden paneling of the central hall on the ground floor, covered with gilded rocaille ornament, serves as a frame for tiles from Harlingen (around 1690, children's play scenes) and Rotterdam (landscape motifs). Another part of the room decoration are wall-mounted paintings (1734) after scenes from Moliere by Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich or his workshop, for which print graphic illustrations by Francois Boucher served as templates. Above the marble fireplace, a copy after Antoine Pesne's "The Fortune Teller" (1710) completes the pictorial program. The hall adjoining to the east is decorated with electoral portraits of Frederick Augustus II and Maria Josepha of Austria, juxtaposed with their portraits as King Augustus III and Queen Maria Josepha of Poland. Even if the original hanging of the paintings is unknown, the inclusion of Hans Löser's portrait in this electoral or royal-Polish circle certainly has programmatic features. The proximity thus established to the Elector and Polish King and the manner of representation reflect Hans Löser's important position at the royal-Polish and electoral-Saxon court. It is an expression of the Löser family's class consciousness as Hereditary Marshals of the Saxon Estates. The partially gilded panels are stylistically adapted to the Harlingen and Rotterdam halls. The paintings, as in the case of King Augustus III, can be traced back to important originals such as that by Louis de Silvestre (around 1748). In addition to the portrait of Hans Löser on the south wall of the hall, the pictorial program concludes with the consort of Augustus the Strong, Christiane Eberhardine, as Electress and Queen of Poland.

The castle was used as a convalescent home "Freundschaft" in the GDR.
