A structure built in the 17th century, Reiteregg Castle, stands on a hill in Hitzendorf, Styria, Austria. It has distinctive stepped gables and a crenellated tower, and remains in private ownership to this day.

History+

The origins of Reiteregg Castle date back to the second half of the 16th century, when a farm estate existed on this site. In the 17th century, the castle was built and initially consisted of two interconnected buildings. In 1660, Ferdinand Ignaz Freiherr von Moscon acquired the estate and initiated expansions, including the construction of the castle chapel. The Moscon family sold the castle in 1871 to Leopold Reichsfreiherr von Haan. He shaped the castle's current appearance, among other things, by adding battlements to the tower and having a mausoleum built for his family.
