Rhede Castle

The origins of Rhede Castle date back to the 13th century, when a fortified complex of the Lords of Rhede stood on this site. In 1324, this castle was destroyed during a feud with the Bishop of Münster. Although it was rebuilt by the subsequent owners, the Lords of Rhemen, it suffered further destruction by troops from Bocholt. In 1546, Lubbert von Rhemen had the old keep demolished and, together with his wife Hillegunde von Diepenbrock zu Kortenhorn, erected a two-winged manor house in the Renaissance style. After the male line of the Rhemen family died out in 1695, the castle changed hands several times. In the 19th century, specifically 1845/46, the southwest wing was rebuilt. In 1860, the Salm-Salm family acquired the estate, which served as their residence after the destruction of their ancestral seat in World War II. Restoration took place in 1980.
