Rheder Castle

Rheder's origins date back to the 14th century, when it was owned by the Knights of Brakel. After their extinction in 1384, the fief fell to the Prince-Bishopric of Paderborn, which subsequently granted it to the Barons von Mengersen. This family built a castle around 1400 and settled in Rheder. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle complex was destroyed, after which Christian von Mengersen had several fortified houses built along the Nethe. Christian Falcko von Mengersen received a privilege in 1686: he was allowed to brew and serve beer in Rheder, laying the foundation for today's castle brewery. The outer bailey was built between 1716 and 1727 under the direction of Johann Conrad Schlaun. The current manor house was built in 1750 according to plans by Johann Matthias Kitz for Franz Joseph von Mengersen.
