Riede Castle

The village Riede was first mentioned in 1074. The current castle was built on the foundations of a court of the Augustinian monastery Merxhausen, whose Romanesque chapel remained until the 19th century. In 1443, Henne von Wehren, who held the estate as a fief from the Landgraves of Hesse, sold the property to the Hessian noble family of Meysenbug. Under their aegis, the castle was rebuilt in 1563 in the Weser Renaissance style, incorporating existing building components and creating a knight's hall. Renaissance cast-iron plates from 1574, designed by Philipp Soldan, adorn the bay window room. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle underwent renovations under Leo von Meysenbug, which altered its original overall appearance.
