Riegerting Castle

The first documented mention of Riegerting as “Rueckering” dates back to 1363, with Hanns Zärtl named as the first owner. The Zärtl family remained resident until their lineage died out. In 1545, the castle was expanded under Hans Jakob Scharffseder, whose family acquired the property through marriage. In 1652, Riegerting passed to the Barons von Seiboltsdorff as a dowry, who had the current castle building and a chapel constructed in 1697. The original, water-surrounded seat was located southwest of the current chapel. The castle changed hands several times, including to the Counts of Lerchenfeld and von Haslang. Since 1829, the estate has been owned by the von Venningen family.
