A monastery was founded in Riesa in 1119. Later, the monastery was converted into a manor. In 1554, the manor was owned by Martin von Miltitz. In 1592, Hanns Levin von Embden was enfeoffed with the Riesa manor. He had the south wing of the former monastery converted into a castle.
