Rietberg Castle (Pratval)

The origins of Rietberg Castle likely date back to around 1200, when its oldest part, the tower, was constructed. The Rietberg family, documented in the 13th and 14th centuries, was dependent on the Lords of Sax-Misox and the Bishops of Chur, owning lands and rights in various regions. When Jean de Rietberg, the last male descendant, faced the extinction of his line around 1340, he attempted to settle his estate. Following his death in 1349, a conflict over the inheritance erupted, lasting over ten years. The Bishop of Chur prevented the testamentary transfer to the Landenbergers and eventually incorporated the castle into the complex of episcopal estates. The castle changed hands multiple times through pledges and sales. In 1530, it passed to Antoine von Travers, whose children sold it in 1554 to Herkules von Salis. In 1617, ownership was divided between the Salis and Pompée von Planta.
