Rif Castle
Rif Castle is located in the municipality of Hallein, in the district of Taxach-Rif, near the Königsseeache river.
In 1250, the Guetrater family, who resided nearby at Guetrat Castle, were enfeoffed with Rif. In 1555, the industrialist Christoph Perner von Rettenwörth expanded the estate into a noble residence. Under Archbishop Johann Jakob von Kuen-Belasy, Rif Castle was developed into a small summer residence after 1560. Thus, the castle temporarily also became a place for princely music cultivation.
The St. George's Chapel in the castle was even allowed to bear the name "Capella Regia" - the title of a royal court chapel - until 1860.
Today, the castle is part of the University and State Sports Centre Salzburg/Rif. The so-called "Weiherhäuschen", the former staff house, is now used as a laboratory building.
