In Salzgitter, Ringelheim Castle is a building that originally served as a monastery and now, as a manor house, provides a setting for cultural events. Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages and it is situated on the Innerste River in Lower Saxony.

History+

The beginnings of today's Ringelheim Castle lie in the 10th century, when a royal convent for virgins was established on this site. This likely occurred under Henry I and Mathilde of Ringelheim between 919 and 936, but possibly not until 940 under Otto I by Count Immat. In 1152, the convent was converted into a Benedictine monastery for men and placed under the Diocese of Hildesheim. After a period from 1523 to 1641 when it was Protestant under Brunswick rule, secularization took place in 1803. The estate became the property of the Prussian Field Marshal von der Schulenburg-Kehnert. In 1817, Friedrich von der Decken acquired the estate and transformed it into a manor house.
