Risegg Castle (Thal)

The castle was first mentioned in a feudal register of Thal in 1496. However, it is not documented whether a "pleasure castle Rysseck" actually burned down at this location during the Swabian War, as the chronicler Tschudy wrote, or whether the Renaissance castle Risegg was built in 1605 by Leonhard Zollikofer zu Altenklingen as a new building in place of a manor house. No new insights were gained even during the conversion to the boarding house "Rose Castle Risegg" of the "Institut auf dem Rosenberg" in 1997/98. Risegg Castle, once surrounded by vines, bushes and trees, has since been overtaken by time. Modern residential buildings have been built partly in the immediate vicinity. The castle gardens to the northeast, with an unobstructed view of the lake, surprise visitors yesterday as they do today. In the style of an architectural garden, the garden complex was redesigned in the 1930s by Fritz Klauser, incorporating historical elements, later severely neglected and only restored a few years ago.
