Rittersbach Castle

Rittersbach Castle is a castle in Bühl in the residential area of Rittersbach. Since the death of its last owner a decade and a half ago, Baron von Glaubitz, it has not been used, and a renovation was very costly.

In June 2009, architect Jürgen Grossmann bought the building along with the 20,000 square meter plot of land. He plans to create exclusive condominiums in the three-story manor house. In addition, single-family houses with flat roofs are to be built on the property in front of the building.

The castle was first mentioned in 1302. In a document, Knight Reinbold von Windeck bequeathed his Eberstein fiefs, including Rittersbach, to his brother Eberhard and his heirs.

Originally, it was a lowland castle and served as an outpost for the hilltop castle Windeck.

In 1351, a Hans zu Tigesheimer was the lord of the castle. The von Bach family owned it from the middle of the 15th century. In 1538, Jörg von Bach died, whose niece Katharina was married in her second marriage to the Worms chamberlain Philipp von Dalberg, and it passed into this family.

In 1615, the estate passed partly through marriage to Johann Philipp Knebel von Katzenelnbogen and Hans Wolf von Eltz. In 1725, the Katzenelnbogen family took over the shares from Eltz. They opened a wine tavern, the serving was carried out by a steward, and the family lived in the Lower Castle Neuweier.

Baron Philipp Knebel von Katzenelnbogen died in 1816; after a long inheritance dispute, the castle was auctioned by the heirs in 1826 to Major von Preen.

In 1833, Karl Christian von Berckheim, honorary citizen of Karlsruhe, bought the castle. Through his son-in-law, Rinck von Baldenstein, it came into the possession of the von Glaubitz family in 1889.

Already in the last decades of this era, the castle increasingly deteriorated and was also used as a tenement for several families, until finally the last family member died in the 1990s.

During a renovation in 1838, the castle received its current appearance. Master builder Paniani added a third floor, and the old castle tower was converted into a stair risalit.

The castle is located on Rittersbacher Straße.
