Rittersfeld Castle

The castle was built by the Archbishops of Salzburg. Later, until 1931, the castle belonged to the Barons Geymüller.

The first documentary mention of a fortified structure on this site dates back to the12th century. However, the current castle largely dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, when it was expanded into a representative residence by the Archbishops of Salzburg. Its strategic location made it an important outpost for securing the archiepiscopal territories.

In the 19th century, the castle came into the possession of the Geymüller family, a prominent Austrian noble family. They undertook extensive renovations and modernizations, transforming the medieval fortress into a comfortable residential castle. The Geymüllers were known for their art collection and their patronage of local artists, which enriched the cultural life of the region.

The castle presents itself as an impressive example of late Gothic and early Renaissance architecture. It combines robust defensive elements with elegant residential wings.

The exterior is characterized by its massive walls, corner towers, and a picturesque courtyard. The main gate, adorned with the coats of arms of former owners, leads into the inner courtyard, which is surrounded by arcades.

Inside, several historically significant rooms have been preserved. These include the Knights' Hall, the Chapel, and various salons with original stucco work and frescoes.

The Knights' Hall

The Knights' Hall, located on the upper floor, served as a banqueting hall and reception room. It impresses with its high vaulted ceiling and a large fireplace.

The Castle Chapel

The Chapel, consecrated to St. Michael, features a baroque altar and valuable stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of the saint.

Today, the castle is a popular destination for tourists and a venue for cultural events.

A part of the castle houses a museum that provides insights into the history of the castle and the region. Exhibits include historical furniture, weapons, and artworks.

The historic premises are also used for concerts, exhibitions, and private events. The unique atmosphere makes the castle a sought-after location for weddings and corporate events.
