Rittershain Castle (Rockensüß)

Rittershain Castle, an Art Nouveau complex with an accompanying park, is located in Rockensüß, Hesse. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, although the current castle was only built in the 19th century.

History+

The first documented mention of a settlement near the current castle site dates back to 1322. By 1376, Rittershain was already referred to as a deserted village when the Lords of Rotenburg held the area as a Hessian fief. Later, Rittershain passed as a Hersfeld fief to the Lords of Eschwege, then to the Lords of Wehren, and finally to the Lords of Cornberg in 1583. A map by Gerhard Mercator from 1592 recorded an estate there, managed by the von Biedenfeld family. In 1843, Hermann Freiherr von Biedenfeld had a new farm built in Rockensüß.
