Ritzen Castle, a building in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer in the Salzburg region, Austria, is an example of regional aristocratic residences. Originally an early medieval castle complex, it has undergone transformations and now serves as a museum.

History+

The earliest mention of the estate, then still known as “Grub,” dates back to 1339, when it was owned by the Grafenberger family. The castle changed hands multiple times, including ownership by the Wispeck, Schönberger, and Ramseider families. After the Ramseiders died out in 1579, the castle passed to the Gastein miners Hans and Christoph Weitmoser. In 1604, the Lords of Ritz acquired the property, giving it its current name. Although the sons of the Ritz family achieved great wealth, they lost it due to an extravagant lifestyle.
