Rockenbrunn Castle

On the path from Haimendorf to Diepersdorf, nestled against the western foothills, the Fürer family of Haimendorf had a small manor house built in 1653. The two-story building, with a solid ground floor and a half-timbered upper floor, encloses a unique courtyard to the north and west, where a rectangular basin surrounded by a sandstone balustrade is located. The former fountain, however, is no longer present. To the south and east, the courtyard is bordered by a retaining wall made of ashlar stones, crowned with another stone balustrade and structured to the east with three deep, round-arched arcade niches, which once defined a garden terrace.

Older inscriptions in ashlar stones suggest that remnants of a previous building were integrated. Müllner already reported in his annals in 1623 that the Rockenbrunn was a "beautiful spring, which gushes from a rock". Therefore, "a large cellar was also hewn into the pure rock". The romantic setting apparently motivated Johann Moritz Fürer, a member of the Pegnesischer Blumenorden, to establish a refuge for friends of the muses here. As an inscription records, Georg Sigmund Fürer had a renovation carried out in 1673 after the slope pressure had destroyed a retaining wall. A dating on a lintel and archival documents suggest further alterations in 1718 and 1832. Although the building history of this complex does not yet seem adequately clarified, it is likely that no significant changes occurred after 1832.

Already in 1653, a tavern business had been established on the property, although no license was available, as the Lorenzi Forest Office once had to ascertain. The property of the Fürer von Haimendorf family, referred to several times as a manor house in the late 18th century, is still used as an inn today.
