Rockenhausen Castle

The origins of the current castle date back to 1243, when a moated castle of the Raugraves, the Ruhenburg, was first mentioned in documents at this location. This castle, inhabited by castellans in 1399, was destroyed in 1504. In the mid-16th century, specifically 1549, the Elector pledged the site to Junker Hans Jakob von Thurn. Around 1571, he had a new Renaissance residential castle built, which included a round tower, a stone spiral staircase, and a cubic Baroque structure with a steep hipped roof. However, the newly built castle was destroyed again during the Thirty Years' War and later in the War of the Palatine Succession.
