Rodaun Castle

School

Rodaun Castle is a historic building located in the 23rd district of Vienna, Liesing. It is characterized by its long history and continuous structural adaptations, which give it an irregular but distinctive appearance. Today, it serves as a school center.

History+

Rodaun Castle was first documented on March 2, 1405, as "vest Radaun," although its origins likely date back to the 12th century. During the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529, the castle benefited from its elevated position and probably suffered less damage than other surrounding structures. In the 16th century, Rodaun became a center of Protestantism in the Vienna region. An evangelical church visitation took place here in 1580. The Rodaun manor, which also included Siebenhirten, frequently changed owners after the Protestant Barons of Landau, until members of the House of Liechtenstein became the last lords before 1848. In 1898, the Roman Catholic order Sta. Christiana acquired the castle from the Mautner Markhof family. The order, specializing in education and nursing, opened a girls' boarding school. A large medieval tower, which was in a state of ruin, was demolished before 1899. During World War II, the castle served as a tank barracks, but resumed school operations after the war. Extensive renovations and restorations took place between 1975 and 1977.
