Rodehorst Castle (Wertherbruch)

According to an old legend, at the beginning of the 15th century, the "wicked knight Rowatasche" is said to have had a fortified house on Rodehorst. Whether he was a robber baron causing mischief or was in a private or political feud with the city of Bocholt is not recorded. However, it is quite certain that around mid-1432, the Bocholt citizens' militia conquered his property and razed it to the ground.

A document from February 10, 1448, shows that Frank von Wittenhorst had meanwhile "getymmert" (built) a house, which he called Rodehorst. Whether this house was destroyed in the Spanish-Dutch War or the Thirty Years' War is not recorded. In any case, after these wars, only a pile of stones remained.

Construction of the Manor House
The current manor house, however, dates from a later era. Its construction is dated to the period between 1650 and 1700.

Its structure features extremely pleasing proportions. Flanked by two chimneys, a roof turret with a bell tower sits in the middle of the ridge.

This old house, too, has been transformed into a showpiece by its owners with great passion and high financial expenditure.

This property is also privately owned and is not normally publicly accessible. As a good view of the front is possible from the courtyard entrance, privacy should be respected.
