Rodenberg Castle

The origins of Rodenberg Castle date back to the 13th century, when the Lords of Schaumburg built a moated castle here. During the transition from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period, the complex transformed into a fortified castle. During the Thirty Years' War, it changed hands several times. After the death of the last Count of Schaumburg, the castle fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel in 1647. A town fire in 1859 destroyed large parts of the castle, leading to the demolition of most buildings. Only the Ständehaus, the former palas, remained. After excavations, the site was converted into an open-air museum in 2005.
