A historic moated castle in Dortmund-Aplerbeck is Rodenberg Castle. Although only the outbuildings of the outer bailey remain, it now serves as a cultural center and a place for community gatherings.

History+

The first documented mention of the estate dates back to 1290, when it was inhabited by Knight Diederich von dem Rodenberg. In 1422, the castle suffered destruction during the Cleves-Markish War of Succession. Hermann von Voss zum Rodenberg had it rebuilt in the following years, adding a residential tower. Between 1689 and 1698, it was converted into a Baroque moated castle. After the male line died out in 1755, the castle was inhabited by foresters and fell into disrepair during the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1985, the city of Dortmund acquired the property and restored it by 1996, making it accessible to the public.
