Rodenberg Castle

Haus Rodenberg is a moated castle in the Aplerbeck district of Dortmund. The economic buildings of the outer bailey are preserved.

Haus Rodenberg was first mentioned in a document in 1290. At this time, it was inhabited by Knight Diederich von dem Rodenberg.

After the destruction of the castle in the Cleves-Markish War of Succession in 1422, reconstruction took place in the following years by Hermann von Voss zum Rodenberg with an attached residential tower.

Between 1689 and 1698, the castle was converted into a baroque moated castle.

In 1755, the male line died out and the house has since been inhabited by the Förster family.

The castle fell into disrepair in the 19th and 20th centuries. All that remained of the former moated castle was the outer bailey with the economic section. In 1985, the property was sold to the city of Dortmund, which had the park and Haus Rodenberg fundamentally restored by 1996 and finally handed it over to the citizens of Dortmund. The castle is listed as an architectural monument, and the former castle as an archaeological monument in the monument list of the city of Dortmund.

Today, Haus Rodenberg houses seminar rooms of the Volkshochschule Dortmund (Adult Education Centre), the Märchenbühne (a puppet theatre for children and adults) as well as upscale gastronomy. The premises of Haus Rodenberg can be rented for so-called "Ambiente-Trauungen" (atmospheric weddings) through the Volkshochschule Dortmund. The former mill pond and the park with its "orchard" are well visited in summer.
