Römershag Castle

In 1334, Heinrich von Sterbfritz was enfeoffed with Römershag. In 1580, after the Sterbfritz family died out, Römershag fell to Martin and Johann von der Tann. From 1648 to 1669, Friedrich and Martin von der Tann built the Renaissance castle. In 1692, Heinrich von der Tann sold the castle to the Prince-Abbot of Fulda. In 1730, Prince-Abbot Adolf von Dalberg had the castle extended in Baroque style. In 1752, the castle church was built for Prince-Bishop Amand von Buseck, the founder of the Brückenau State Spa. After 1816, the castle served as a forestry office and tax office. In 1884, a district institution for the incurably ill was established in the castle, and today it serves as a retirement and nursing home for the district of Lower Franconia.
