Youth hostel

South of Admont in Styria, Röthelstein Castle, an early Baroque complex, is on the slopes of the Klosterkogel. Originally built as a summer residence for the abbots of Admont Abbey, it now serves as a youth hostel.

History+

The construction of Röthelstein Castle took place between 1655 and 1657 under Abbot Urban Weber of Admont Abbey. It served as a summer retreat for the abbots and their fellow monks. When Admont Abbey was destroyed by fire in 1865, the castle temporarily provided shelter for the monks. Until World War II, the castle housed an extensive art gallery.
