Roith Castle

The origins of Schloss Roith date back to the 16th century when the estate "in der Reuth" was owned by the Polheim family and later by Hans Paumgartner. The small castle was likely built around 1596. Emperor Rudolf II elevated Roith to the status of a noble "Freisitz." In 1597, it passed from Friedrich von Pollheim to Siegmund Jäger and his wife Margaretha, before going to the Seeauer family of Hallstatt. It later came into the possession of Georg Albert Plaß von Mühlleiten, whose coat of arms from 1659 above the entrance gate suggests structural alterations. After the Plaß family, the now count-ranked Seeauers once again became owners. In 1719, Count Josef Ehrenreich von Seeau sold the property to the Gmunden citizen Johann Adam Aigner. Through his daughter's marriage, Roith passed to Johann Paul Lichtenauer.
