Rommershausen Castle

Rommershausen Castle is a Renaissance castle in the Rommershausen district of Schwalmstadt, Hesse.

In 1535, Reichart Rinck († before 1557) acquired the property of the dissolved Haina Monastery in Rommershausen and had the small castle complex, consisting of three individual buildings, erected starting in 1539. The complex is remarkable for the artistic effort of the wing from 1549, which was created by one of the most famous Renaissance sculptors in Northern Hesse. The building ornamentation bears the initials of Philipp Soldan.

From an art historical perspective, the castle is close to a provincial artistic creation, yet the richness of early Renaissance forms alongside those of the late Gothic period is remarkable. This combination is characteristic of the early Weser Renaissance.

In the reliefs, the builder had part of his family history worked out. All images refer to the death of his wife and the importance of his daughter, who took her place.

In 1644, the castle passed to the von Hoff family. A cast-iron stove with a majolica top from 1661/1663 is part of the oldest furnishings. Extension construction measures were carried out in 1672.

Since 1765, the castle has been owned by the von Schwertzell family, whose ancestral seat is Willingshausen Castle.
