In the valley north of the castle hill of Rosegg in Carinthia, Austria, stands Rosegg Castle, also known as Lukrezia Castle or Liechtenstein Castle. This classicist complex, built from 1772, replaced the medieval Rosegg Castle as the manorial seat.

History+

The Orsini-Rosenberg family owned the Rosegg dominion since 1686. In September 1772, Count Franz Xaver Wolfgang von Orsini-Rosenberg, a confidant of Maria Theresia and Joseph II, began construction of the castle. The new residential building was intended to replace the old castle as the main seat and was completed before 1780. Tuscan or Venetian villas may have served as inspiration for the builder. After its completion, the castle assumed the role of the manorial seat. In 1829, the Orsini-Rosenbergs sold their properties to Peter Ritter von Bohr, who established a wildlife park around the castle.
