Rosenau Castle

The origins of Rosenau Castle date back to 1593, when the Lords of Greiß expanded an existing four-sided farmstead into a Renaissance castle. The estate experienced a period from 1720 to 1803 under the Counts of Schallenberg. Leopold Christoph Count of Schallenberg acquired the estate in 1720 and had the castle redesigned according to plans by the Baroque master builder Joseph Munggenast. During this time, premises for a Masonic lodge were also created, as well as an almost completely preserved estate settlement. After its sale in 1803, the castle changed hands several times, including Ernst Christoph Georg August Count Hardenberg and later the Stift family. In 1863, Creszentia Stummer became mistress of the castle, followed by Mathias von Schönerer in 1868. His nephew Georg Heinrich Ritter von Schönerer inherited the property in 1883 and had Austria's only Bismarck Tower built in 1907. After his death in 1921, his daughters managed the inheritance until 1928.
