History+
The first documented mention of Rosenau Castle dates back to 1439, when it was owned by the noble lords of Rosenawe. It is presumed that a predecessor structure existed before 1424. The von Rosenau family, who derived their name from their ancestral seat, has been traceable since the second half of the 13th century and possessed lands in the region. In the 16th century, the family encountered economic difficulties, leading to the definitive loss of the castle in 1704. It was acquired by the Austrian Baron Ferdinand Adam von Pernau, who used it as a summer residence and for his ornithological studies. After Pernau's death in 1731, the castle changed hands again and was acquired in 1805 by Duke Franz Friedrich Anton of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld for his son Ernst I. Under Duke Ernst I., a reconstruction in the Neo-Gothic style took place between 1806 and 1817, based on plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, with the park being redesigned as an English garden.
