Rosenburg Castle, also known as "Höfli" in the local dialect, is a historic building in Stans that today houses a museum and a restaurant. It is characterized by its complex architectural history, which combines traces of various eras.

History+

Originally, the property served as the administrative seat for the majordomos of the Murbach-Lucerne monastery for its territories in Stans. The family of majordomos died out in 1340. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times: Sebastian Kretz acquired it in the first half of the 16th century, followed by Johannes Waser in 1558 and Nikolaus Keyser from 1692. In 1969, ownership transferred to the Höfli Foundation. The current appearance is the result of numerous renovations and extensions. The oldest part, a watchtower from the 13th century, is located in the north. Sebastian Kretz added a three-story annex in 1532. Architect Mannes Waser significantly shaped the castle through renovations between 1559 and 1566, and again in 1584, adding, among other things, a stair tower and a loggia. Nikolaus Keyser had rooms paneled, an projection built on the north facade, and a house chapel installed in the late 17th century. Between 1974 and 1981, the Höfli Foundation extensively restored the building to restore its late 17th-century character.
