Rosendal Palace

The site, originally a residence for animal keepers, was given by Gustav III to his secretary Georg De Besche, who had a wooden building erected around 1790. After several changes of ownership, including Countess Aurora de Geer and Hans Niclas Schwan, Crown Prince Karl Johan acquired the property. After the original building burned down in 1819, Karl Johan commissioned architect Fredrik Blom to construct the current palace, which was built between 1823 and 1827. The palace is a prefabricated wooden house with 17 rooms on two floors, finished with plastered facing brick. The interior was designed by Emanuel Limnell. Later additions included a two-story veranda in the 1860s and a tent-like dining room in the 1870s. The two-story “Queen's Pavilion” was built before the main building. Since 1913, the palace has served as a museum.

Today, Rosendal Palace is a museum dedicated to the era of Karl XIV Johan and the Bernadotte dynasty. During the summer months, visitors can admire original furnishings in the Karl Johan style from the 1820s and 1830s, including Karl Johan's unaltered library and his bedroom, which was moved here from Stockholm Palace in 1913. The building is considered one of Sweden's ten royal palaces.
