Rosenhof Castle

The origins of the castle date back to 1760, when Count Alois Thomas Raymond Harrach had it built as a hunting lodge. In 1773, it came into the possession of Count Ferdinand Bonaventura von Harrach, who held the lordships of Freistadt and Harrachsthal. He named the hunting lodge after his wife and daughter, giving rise to the name Rosenhof. Under his patronage, the estate developed into a model operation for agriculture and livestock farming. After the Count's death, his daughter Rosa inherited the property and married into the princely house of Kinsky in 1777, in whose possession the castle has remained ever since. Between 1780 and 1792, the castle was expanded with the addition of the east wing. After the death of Princess Rosa in 1813, Rosenhof passed to Count Franz de Paula Josef Kinsky, who added the west wing in 1827, giving the castle its current appearance. In 1876, the Kinsky estate administration from Harrachsthal was relocated here, accompanied by further minor alterations.
