Rosenholm Castle

The history of the Rosenholm Castle site dates back to the 14th century. Originally ecclesiastical property, it fell to the Danish Crown after the Reformation in 1536. In 1559, the Crown exchanged the estate with the Rosenkrantz family, who then began construction of the current castle. Between 1559 and 1567, under Jørgen “George” Rosenkrantz, a member of the famous noble family whose name is even mentioned in Shakespeare's “Hamlet,” the four-winged castle was built. By around 1607, the Italian Renaissance-style construction was fully completed. In the 18th century, specifically the 1740s, an extensive five-hectare garden with symmetrical avenues and hedges was laid out. At the same time, the castle's interior underwent a redesign in the Baroque style.

Rosenholm Castle is located north of Hornslet on the Djursland peninsula in the Syddjurs district, Midtjylland region, Denmark. It stands at an elevation of approximately 16 meters above sea level.

Rosenholm Castle is currently privately owned. It houses an extensive collection of furniture, paintings, and tapestries. A special highlight is the garden pavilion, known as Pirkentavl, which dates from 1560. The castle is accessible to visitors during the summer months.
