Rothaus Castle (Näfels)
Rothaus Castle in Näfels, Canton Glarus, is an impressive example of Baroque architecture. It is characterized by its symmetrical design as a double house with a striking, centrally placed tower, which gives the building a special presence.
History+
The construction of Rothaus Castle is dated to 1746, a year found on one of the stoves inside the building. The builder is considered to be Landammann and troop recruiter Fridolin Joseph Hauser (1713–1783), who is referred to as “illustrissimus” in local documents. Hauser, who was also secretary of Einsiedeln Monastery and later appointed Landseckelmeister and Landstatthalter, was in a position to erect such a representative estate. The year 1777 on the portal refers only to a later restoration. The Bourbon lilies on the portal indicate a connection between the builder and the French royal house.
