In Bavarian Rothenbuch, amidst the Spessart forest, stands Rothenbuch Castle. This historic structure, once a hunting lodge, hints at a past as a moated castle.

History+

The first documented mention of Rothenbuch Castle dates back to July 3, 1318. The castle's current appearance is due to a reconstruction in 1567, carried out according to the designs of Daniel Brendel von Homburg. The complex was once surrounded by moats, fed by the Hafenlohr river, which originates here and also supplied the surrounding fish-rich lakes. For over two centuries, the castle served as an administrative center in the Spessart and acted as a court for fourteen surrounding villages.
