Rothenthurn Castle
Rothenthurn Castle, whose origins date back to the 11th century, serves today as an inn above the village of the same name on the southern slope of the Insberg in the municipality of Spittal an der Drau.
History+
The first documented owner was Hans Kreutzer in 1478. In the mid-16th century, the castle came into the possession of the Khevenhüller family, who entrusted it to the castle steward Ehrenholdt Eschey. In the 18th century, ownership passed to the mining families Eineter and Perscher. In 1882, the Normann-Ehrenfels family owned the estate. Today, Rothenthurn Castle belongs to the Pereira-Arnstein family.

The oldest part of the complex is the “Red Tower,” whose core likely dates back to the 11th century. An underground passage leads from this central wing to Maximiliansburg.
