Rottwerndorf Castle

The first mention of Rottwerndorf dates back to 1337. The castle originated from a moated castle around 1200. In March 1554, Damian von Sebottendorf acquired the manor. A fire in January 1555 destroyed the manor house and adjacent farmsteads. Sebottendorf initiated the reconstruction as a Renaissance castle, completed between 1556, 1561, and 1579, as indicated by preserved dates. It remained with the Sebottendorf family until 1710, after which ownership changed, including the families von Berbisdorf and von Leyser. Later, it passed into bourgeois hands, such as Superintendent Tischer and Oekonomierat Hermann Degenkolb, who established extensive tree nurseries. In 1917, tobacco manufacturer Hugo Zietz acquired the property before it transferred to the city of Pirna in 1927.
