Rudenz Castle (Flüelen)
Rudenz Castle in Flüelen, Canton Uri, is a historic structure whose origins date back to the early 13th century. It was once conceived as a fortified defensive tower to monitor the strategically important Gotthard Road and serve as an imperial customs post.
History+
The tower was first mentioned in a document in 1369. Around 1300, the imperial customs were in the hands of the Lords of Attinghausen. Freiherr Johann von Attinghausen is named as the first known owner. After his death around 1359, the complex came into the possession of the Knights of Rudenz from the Haslital around 1360 through marriage. With the death of Johann von Rudenz in 1382, the Rudenz line died out. The tower, built in the 13th century, underwent several alterations over time, with its current appearance being largely shaped by the 17th century. The castle courtyard was reduced, moats were filled in, and the original curtain wall with its corner towers was demolished, with only minor remnants remaining.
