In the municipality of Rügland in Middle Franconia stands Rügland Castle, a moated castle complex. The complex, composed of two main parts, has been renovated and now houses a museum.

History+

The settlement of the Rügland area dates back to the Stone Age. The first documented mention of the place occurred in 1137, when Berta, the widow of Gerunch von Wielandsheim, was granted ownership rights. Ten years later, in 1147, Rügland was given as a fief to the St. Gumbert Monastery in Ansbach. By 1298 at the latest, the Lords of Vestenberg owned the moated castle in Rügland as well as Rosenberg Castle. In 1584, Hanns von Vestenberg sold his possessions to his cousin Ernst von Crailsheim. The current “Alte Schloss” (Old Castle) replaced the original moated castle in 1611.
