Not far from the town of Mügeln, Ruhethal Castle stands, a historic building that once served as an episcopal residence and now houses a cultural center. Its 40-meter-high tower, which shapes the castle's silhouette, is striking.

History+

The castle's origins date back to 1150, when a complex with a chapel was built in the Döllnitz Valley, serving as an episcopal seat. A moated castle previously stood on the same site. Meissen bishops made changes in 1261 and 1341. Under Bishop Nikolaus I., the 40-meter-high tower was erected around 1380. Around 1590, Ruhethal Castle served as a retreat for Bishop Johann IX. von Haugwitz.
