Rydzyna Castle

The origins of Rydzyna Castle date back to the 15th century, when it was built as a Gothic fortress for the Rydzyński family on an artificial island. Between 1682 and 1695, a comprehensive Baroque reconstruction took place for the aristocratic Leszczyński family. Under the direction of court architects Simone Giuseppe Belotti and Pompeo Ferrari, a four-story building with a square floor plan and four corner towers was created. Ferrari designed the west wing in the style of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, while Michelangelo Palloni designed the interiors. The castle later came into the possession of the Sułkowski family. From 1742 to 1745, architect Karl Martin Frantz modernized the facades in Rococo style and added new roofs and tower spires. A ceiling painting by Georg Wilhelm Neunhertz adorned the ballroom. Further alterations under Ignaz Graff took place from 1785 to 1790, with Corinthian columns and sculptures added to the ballroom. Between 1927 and 1928, the castle served as a gymnasium. In 1945, it completely burned down during World War II. Reconstruction began in 1950 and was carefully continued after the takeover by the Association of Polish Mechanical Engineers and Technicians in 1970. For this reconstruction, the castle received the “Europa Nostra” diploma in 1994.

Rydzyna Castle is located in the town of Rydzyna, in the Wielkopolskie (Greater Poland) district in the Południowo-Zachodni region of Poland, at an elevation of approx. 96 meters above sea level.
