Saager Castle

In the 13th century, the area around Saager belonged to the dominion of Viktring Abbey. Its monks had already built a chapel here around 1228. However, a fortified structure was not mentioned for the first time until 1382. It is possible that it existed before then, as a tower standing next to it was half-owned by the Styrian Lords of Thurnau. In 1382, a chapel in Zäger near the tower is mentioned. From 1376, Saager belonged as a freeholding to a branch of the Lords of Metnitz. From 1601, the castle had Burgfrieden rights. Over time, the castle was expanded by the Metnitz family into the present-day palace. This remained in the possession of the Metnitz family until after 1800.

After that, there was a frequent change of ownership, which continued into the 20th century. Mostly, these were peasant owners who were primarily interested in the estate's operations. Only the Edelmann family, who owned Saager from 1841, lived here until 1956. After that, Josef Planteu acquired the palace, but sold it in 1961 to the Carinthian painter Giselbert Hoke. Between 1969 and 1973, a comprehensive restoration of the complex took place, followed by a facade restoration in 1994. In 1993, the painter's two sons took over the palace.
