Saalfeld Castle, a Baroque castle, was built on the grounds of a former Benedictine monastery. It served as a ducal residence and later as an administrative seat.

History+

The foundation stone for Saalfeld Castle was laid on March 26, 1677, under the aegis of Dukes Albrecht and Bernhard of Saxe-Gotha. After a pause, construction continued thirteen years later under Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Saalfeld. By 1704, the north wing was completed, while work on the castle garden and the castle chapel progressed simultaneously. By 1720, the entire building, including the now-defunct low south wing, was finished. The interior decoration was completed in 1726.
