Saalfeld Castle
Saalfeld Castle is a baroque castle on the grounds of a former Benedictine monastery in Saalfeld in the Saale valley. It was built from 1677 to 1726 under several construction managers. The building served as the residence of Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Saalfeld until 1735.
On March 26, 1677, the construction of the castle began by Dukes Albrecht and Bernhard of Saxe-Gotha. 13 years later, the castle construction was continued under Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Saalfeld. Thus, the north wing was completed in 1704. In parallel, work on the castle garden progressed, and the castle chapel was also built at this time. In 1720, the low south wing (no longer existing today) and thus the entire building were completed. It took until 1726 before the interior decoration was also finished.
From 1735, the castle was converted into the administrative seat of the city. Between 1919 and 1922, it became an administrative building. After a fire in 1953, part of the chapel roof truss was destroyed, which was restored in 1966.
Current Use+
Today, the castle serves as the seat of the administration of the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district. As in earlier times, the castle park is freely accessible.
