Saalhof Castle

Archaeological findings during renovations showed that the current building, whose core dates from the early 17th century, was erected on older foundations and wall sections on the north and east sides. The noble seat was first documented in 1423, when it was owned by Oswald Eisenstang. Prior to that, the estate was likely already owned by "Konrad the Devil" in 1296 and was an archiepiscopal fief. In 1584, the property passed to the Amann von Judendorf family. Under Cristoff Amann von Judendorf zu Saal, the castle acquired its current appearance at the beginning of the 17th century. A marble plaque above the ogee arch portal dates the completion of construction to 1606. In 1634, the castle changed hands to the Riedl family. A coat of arms on the first floor commemorates the marriage of Mathias Riedl to Maria Riedlin née Stöcklin in 1661. In 1714, it passed to the Kobald von Dambach zu Moll family, and in 1759, Maria Anna von Hackledt became the owner. She bequeathed it to her four children in 1765. Her daughter Elisabeth Amalia married Rochus von Braun and took over the property in 1798.
