Saarbrücken Castle

The castle's origins date back to ancient times. An imperial Castell Sarabruca was mentioned as early as 999, known as Veste Sarebrugka in 1009. In 1065, Duke Frederick of Lower Lorraine received the castle as a fief. After its destruction in 1168 by Emperor Frederick I, the complex was rebuilt and fortified in the 15th century under Count Johann IV of Nassau-Saarbrücken, who had bulwarks constructed and a drawbridge built in 1563. Count Philipp IV expanded the complex with a summer house in 1575. In 1677, the castle was destroyed by imperial troops but was restored around 1696 under the widow of Gustav Adolf of Nassau-Saarbrücken, Countess Eleonore Clara, and her son Ludwig Kraft. Following the death of Friedrich Ludwig of Nassau-Saarbrücken in 1728, the property reverted to the Usingen branch of the House of Nassau. In 1735, Princess Charlotte Amalie divided the inherited lands, and her son Wilhelm Heinrich received the territories on the left bank of the Rhine. In 1741, Friedrich Joachim Stengel was commissioned to assess the castle's condition. He developed comprehensive urban planning designs and created the topographical conditions for the new construction. The current Baroque castle was completed in 1748 and served as the residence, place of representation, and administrative seat for the princely family.

Saarbrücken Castle is situated in Saarbrücken, the state capital of Saarland, within the Saarbrücken regional association in Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 204 meters above sea level.

Today, Saarbrücken Castle houses the administrative headquarters of the Saarbrücken regional association. Additionally, the exhibition rooms of the Historical Museum Saar are located in the vaulted cellar and an annex. Parts of the medieval castle complex, particularly the casemates, have been uncovered beneath the castle square and are accessible to visitors via the Historical Museum.
