Sachsenhagen Castle

Around 1250, Duke Albrecht I of Saxony had the moated castle built to secure his dominion and promote the colonization of the Dülwald forest. Following an agreement with the Diocese of Minden in 1253, the Duke had to cede the castle but received half of it back as a fief. Count Ernst von Holstein-Schaumburg had the moated castle converted into a palace around 1600. After the division of the County of Schaumburg in 1665, the castle fell under the rule of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel and gradually deteriorated. In the 20th century, the keep housed a youth hostel and later served for sports activities. The former administrative building and an outbuilding have been privately owned since 1969.
