Sacrow Castle

The origins of Sacrow date back to the 14th century, when a knight's estate was first mentioned. In 1764, the Swedish Lieutenant General Johann Ludwig von Hordt acquired the estate and had a new manor house built in 1773 on the site of a previous building. This presented itself in strictly symmetrical Baroque architecture. In 1779, the property passed to Heinrich Karl de la Motte Fouqué; his son, the later poet Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, spent parts of his youth here. After several changes of ownership, including the Berlin banker Magnus, who hosted Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy here, King Frederick William IV acquired the estate in 1840. He commissioned Ludwig Persius to extend the manor house with a two-story Italian-style annex and Peter Joseph Lenné to design the park.
